CMU nursing student hangs self – report

MALAYBALAY CITY – A graduating nursing student from Central Mindanao University (CMU) was found dead, and it was suspected that the victim has committed suicide

According to a police report, the incident occurred at Purok 16, Sampaguita, Musuan, Maramag, Bukidnon.

The victim’s identity was not released, but he was a 22-year-old male victim who lived in the area.

Accordingly, his brother discovered him hanging with a nylon rope knotted around his neck and fastened to a tree branch around 5:40 AM on November 17, 2023.

Police officers and Maramag Rural Health Unit (RHU) workers responded to the incident site.

The body of the fatality was taken in the Maramag rescue vehicle to RHU Maramag for a physical examination.

The report said that other than the tie marks on his neck, there were no signs of physical trauma on the fatality’s body.

According to the fatality’s father, his son had an on-and-off relationship with his girlfriend which is in Australia.

He went on to say that his son has posted several suicide attempts on social media.

CMU-BTL tension arises anew

MALAYBALAY CITY (Nov. 22, 2023) – Another tension has arisen between the security personnel of Central Mindanao University (CMU) and members of a farmer’s group called Buffalo, Tamaraw, Limus (BTL) on November 21 afternoon

The commotion occurred near Sayre Highway, Purok 21-A, Dologon, Maramag, when CMU security personnel attempted to drive away farmers who had been erecting temporary structures within the university’s gated area, particularly at the university’s Beef Cattle Project.

According to the report, four people were injured as a result of the beating with sticks and stone-throwing that erupted between the two groups. As reported, one of them was CMU security personnel.

The tension subsided only when personnel from Maramag Municipal Police Station (MMPS) arrived.

The university administration has released a memorandum advising its faculty members of the implementation of a flexible/outcomes-based Teaching/Learning Arrangement the day following the incident to protect the safety and security of the students.

BTL members have infiltrated, occupied, and built shanties in the Beef Cattle Project area fronting the Sayre Highway ahead of the 2023 Barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan Election (BSKE).

CMU’s agriculture, veterinary, and forestry students would use the area as a laboratory.

To recall, on October 31, 2023, CMU personnel removed part of the shanties in the region with the presence of police and soldiers, but BTL members resisted. Later, the Mayor of Maramag and his Vice Mayor arrived, and a discussion took place.

BTL has yet to issue a statement on the incident as of this writing. (melbmadera)

Locally-developed drones mimic birds, drop seeds for reforestation

Biomimicry uses drone technology to drop seeds just like what birds do to restore denuded forests

The drone is called the galansiyang, named after the Asian Glossy Starling, a bird that drops seeds everywhere. Just like the bird, the drone also goes to places that are hard to reach.

It was developed in the Computer Applications Department of the College of Computer Studies at the Iligan Institute of Technology (IIT), Mindanao State University.

It morphed into the Galinsayang, a startup company incubated by the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) Northern Mindanao. It now leads a reforestation project at the Kalatungan mountain ranges in Pangantucan, Bukidnon.

The P5.5-million reforestation project will cover four hectares out of 21,000 has., according to Ritchie Guno, DOST provincial director for Bukidnon. The project is a collaboration between Galansiyang, the Protected Area Management Board (PAMB) of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources, DOST, and the local government.

Using drones, Galansiyang has a 90 percent success rate in reforesting land areas in Mindanao, Guno said.

It uses the seeds of balansihan, talingtingan, bagalug and ulayan, all endemic tree species. The seeds are coated with charcoal, manure, compost, clay, and a microbial inoculant, a slow-release fertilizer that supports plant growth. The mix is then shaped into balls.

Using 3-D printing, the drones are modified to carry and then drop the seed balls in reforestation areas.

The seed balls are prepared by students at the Bukidnon Community College, members of the Manubo and Kalatungan Mandum indigenous communities which collects the seeds in the mountains, and PAMB which approves the seeds used. The selection is based on the recommendation of the Central Mindanao University which has the data on Mt. Kalatungan’s endemic plants.

Mt. Kalatungan is the country’s fifth-tallest peak and home to at least 129 animal species and 342 plant species.

“Our methodology is founded on one of the natural ways of plant propagation with birds as seed dispersers,” said Jay Gajudo, chief executive officer of Galansiyang.

“Using drones, we can plant trees faster compared to manual tree-planting. One person can plant 480 seedlings in eight hours, while one drone can plant 8,366 seed balls in one hour.”

Galinsayang displays data on its digital platform, for easy monitoring, transparency, and to make data-driven decisions. (Malaya)

CMU grad ranks 2nd in Veterinarians Licensure Exam

MALAYBALAY CITY – A graduate of Central Mindanao University in Musuan, Maramag, Bukidnon placed second in the Veterinarians Licensure Examination held on Oct. 11, 12, and 13 in 10 cities across the country

Clarissa Therese Montilla Mordeno got a rating of 84.04 percent.

Mordeno, a resident of Davao City, finished her secondary education at the Philippine Science High School-Southern Mindanao Campus.

Juridico Babiano of De La Salle-Araneta University aced the board with a rating of 84.28 percent.

Jan Reginald Cruz Tabora, another examinee from De La Salle-Araneta University, placed fifth with his 82.18-percent rating.

Katherine Dion Oda Nera of Isabela State University-Echague was fourth with a rating of 82.86 percent.

Four examinees from the University of the Philippines Los Banos were among the top nine passers – Diego Antonio Gonzales Hernandez, 83.42 percent (3rd), Denielle Fuentes Germodo, 81.98 percent (6th), Princess Jamie Aranillo Provido, 80.78 percent (8th), and John Kenneth Lee Dudan, 80.70 percent (9th).

The Professional Regulation Commission (PRC) and the Board of Veterinary Medicine conducted the licensure exam in Manila, Baguio, Cagayan de Oro, Cebu, Davao, Koronadal, Legazpi, Lucena, Rosales, and Tuguegarao.

The PRC said 92 of the 985 examinees passed the examination or a national passing rate of 9.34 percent.

DA-NorMin holds annual R4D review

MALAYBALAY CITY, BUKIDNON – The Department of Agriculture – Regional Field Office 10 (DA-RFO 10), through its Research Division, spearheaded the agency’s Research for Development (R4D) Review on October 2-3 at the Northern Mindanao Agricultural Crops and Livestock Research Complex (NMACLRC) in Dalwangan

Evaluators from the Northern Mindanao Research Development and Extension Network (NOMIRDEN) member agencies reviewed the 12 presented research studies/projects, comprising 10 completed and two ongoing.

The annual R4D review mainly aims to evaluate the methodology used in research projects, the attainment of objectives, and the generation of comments and suggestions to the identified challenges affecting research project adoption.

The proposed research projects include crops, developmental research, integrated farming systems, pest and nutrient management, value-added products development, adaptability yield trials, technology adoption, and other fields of studies concerning the agriculture sector.

DA-10 Regional Executive Director Carlene C. Collado extended his gratitude to the evaluators for their time and effort in helping the agency’s research initiative be approved until submission to the Bureau of Agricultural Research (BAR) based on the evaluations.

“DA management is fully supportive of our research initiatives, and hopefully, all of these proposals will contribute to an empowered research and development system, which will lead to expanded economic opportunities for those who engage in agriculture and fisheries, particularly small and subsistence farmers and fisherfolk,” he said.

Dir. Collado challenged the researchers to transfer the products of technology down to the farmers’ level and hoped that the personnel could identify success stories from their studies.

Meanwhile, DA-10 Regional Technical Director for Operations Carlota S. Madriaga shared the significance of generating scientific findings and their relevance to the mandates and thrust of DA, which is food security.

“As One DA, we will invite other Regional Management Committee (RMC) members to present for the next research review so that we can really have that One DA system,” she conveyed.

Closing the activity is the awarding of the best research papers, of which Maridith A. Flores, Senior Science Research Specialist of DA-10 Research division, won first place for her study, “Market-driven Varietal Testing and Validation for Effective Positioning of Varieties in Target Rice Ecosystems and Seed Chains in Region 10.”

Placing second and third were Berly F. Tatoy, PhD, Research Center for Hilly Land Development chief for her study, “Surveillance, Monitoring and Management of Arthropods and Diseases of Corn in Mindanao,” and Carmelito R. Lapoot, NMACLRC chief for the “Soil Health Management for Sustained Yield of Cassava”, respectively.

The three best research paper awardees will advance for presentation and competition to this year’s regional research symposium annually conducted by the Northern Mindanao Consortium on Agriculture, Aquaculture Research and Development (NOMCAARD).

The panel of Evaluators were Elmer E. Enicola of the Institute of Plant Breeding – University of the Philippines – Los Baños (IPB-UPLB); Floro V. Dalapag of the Regional Agricultural and Fishery Council (RAFC); Mercedita G. Barbarona and Lydia E. Tiongco of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR); Maria Estella B. Detalla, PhD and Lowella R. Angcos, PhD of the Central Mindanao University (CMU); and Ma. Estrella Luz Penaloza of the National Economic Development Authority (NEDA).

41 awarded, recognized by DENR-10

The Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR), Region 10 recognizes various stakeholders and partners during the Culmination Program of the Environment Month Celebration on June 30, 2023, held at DENR 10 covered court Puntod, Cagayan de Oro City

DENR officials, employees, and partner stakeholders are welcomed by the Regional Executive Director (RED) Henry A. Adornado. Hon. Rufus B. Rodriquez the 2nd district Representative of Cagayan de Oro City, shared his accomplishments and encouraged the DENR 10 to continue the efforts in protecting the environment and natural resources of the region.

As partners in the protection and conservation of the environment and implementation of various DENR programs, projects, and activities, a total of 41 stakeholders and partners including several national government agencies, civil society organizations/non-governmental organizations, academe, and other individuals were awarded and recognized by the DENR 10, Environmental Management Bureau (EMB) 10 and Mines and Geosciences Bureau (MGB) 10, led by RED Henry A. Adornado, Assistant Regional Director (ARD) for Management Services Ma. Theresa J. Allen, Regional Director (RD) Reynaldo S. Digamo, and RD Felizardo A. Gacad Jr.

A signing of Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) between DENR 10 and Central Mindanao University (CMU), Mindanao State University(MSU) Nawaan, MSU-Marawi, and Xavier University-Ateneo de Cagayan for internship programs was also conducted. MSU-IIT student wins Brightest Buwis Master reg’l tilt

CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY (PIA)–A student from the Mindanao State University-Iligan Institute of Technology emerged as the regional champion of the search for the Philippines’ Brightest Buwis Masters (PBBM) of 2023

Al Rajhie Papandayan, a second-year BS Accountancy student, aced 12 other college students in the final round of the tax quiz competition.

As the regional champion, Papandayan will advance to the national level on July 28 at the BIR national office in Quezon City. Here, the grand champion, first runner-up, and second runner-up will each receive plaques of recognition and cash prizes. Their respective schools will also receive an award to celebrate their success.

The search for tax quiz champs nationwide is part of the tax awareness campaign of the Bureau of Internal Revenue (BIR), which aims to enhance the knowledge of the youth sector, who are future taxpayers, on the country’s tax laws and regulations and other tax matters.

In Northern Mindanao, the regional search was spearheaded by BIR Revenue Region (RR)-16 with the support of the Philippine Institute of Certified Public Accountants.

It was held at the BIR-RR16 office on July 3, with 49 participating college students who were put to the test through tax-related quizzes specifically focused on income, value-added, and percentage taxes, as well as the taxpayers’ registration requirements.

Of the 49, the top 12 were selected to partake in the final face-off. It had three rounds (easy, average, and difficult), each with ten questions.

Papandayan was declared the champion, with Cristine Jane Oppus as the first runner-up and Joan Marinay as the second runner-up. Both runners-up are from Central Mindanao University (CMU).

Aside from MSU-IIT and CMU, other participating schools were Bukidnon State University, Cagayan de Oro College-PHINMA, Capitol University, Christ the King College, La Salle University Ozamiz, Liceo de Cagayan, and Lourdes College. (APB/PIA-10)

RCPC technical staff upskill for standardization, prod’n of biological control agents

MARAMAG, BUKIDNON – To ensure the production of quality fungus which will be distributed to the local farmers in Northern Mindanao, some technical staff of the Regional Crop Protection Center (RCPC) of the DA-RFO 10 underwent training in Central Mindanao University

Department of Agriculture-Regional Field Office 10 Regional Executive Director Carlene C. Collado stressed that the production and distribution of the quality fungus could be the basis for the management protocol and its application in the field.

Lucille T. Minguez, RCPC Chief along with the seven technical staff under the Entomopathogen and Trichoderma laboratories conducted spores counting and dilution technique necessary for standardization in the production of Biological Control Agents (BCAs).

Dr. Carolina Amper of the Plant Pathology Department, College of Agriculture in CMU discussed and demonstrated the spores counting of Trichoderma harzianum using a heamacytometer.

The standardization of spore suspension is vital in conducting pathogenicity and inoculation of BCA by determining the population.

Dr. Amper demonstrated the proper dilution techniques to determine the counting of colonies on plates necessary for the isolation of inoculum for soil-borne pathogens. (DA RFO-10)

Bukidnon farmers dominate regional coffee competition

Seven farmers from Pangantucan, Bukidnon were awarded for their quality coffee beans during the first Northern Mindanao Coffee Quality Competition. The awarding was held in Malaybalay, Bukidnon last March 18, 2023

Based on DTI Region 10, the coffee quality competition consists of two categories; the Arabica category and Robusta category.

Manolito Garces of New Eden, Pangantucan placed first for his Arabica coffee beans with 87.13% rating. Followed by Aiza Inahan from Pigtauranan, Pangantucan, Bukidnon with 85.15%; Arnold Pina of Pigtauranan, Pangantucan with 84.19%; Marion Inahan also from Pigtauranan, Pangantucan with 83.75%; MILFACO from Miarayon, Talakag, Bukidnon with 82.94; and Aurora Chiong form Claveria, Misamis Oriental with 81.40%.

Meanwhile, Primitiva Mahumot still from Pigtauranan, Pangantucan, Bukidnon won first place in the Robusta category with a rating 84.38%; 2nd place is Ranel Balatero from Pigtauranan, Pangantucan with 83.31%; 3rd is Noel Duyongan from Kibenton, Impasug-ong, Bukidnon with 83.25%; Marvin Dagohoy in 4th place from Pigtauranan, Pangantucan with 82.63%; and Dennis Ong in 5th place from Claveria, Misamis Oriental with 81.5%.

The competition was held last March 14-17, 2023 at the Coffee Cupping Laboratory of Central Mindanao University (CMU), Bukidnon. (MG Mayumi B. Madera)
