MALAYBALAY CITY, Bukidnon —The National Commission on Indigenous Peoples (NCIP) Bukidnon Provincial Office has strongly condemned the misuse of indigenous attire and accessories during the recent Lechon Festival, part of the Kaamulan Festival 2026 celebrations

In a statement dated April 20, 2026, NCIP Bukidnon Acting Provincial Officer Ronaldo L. Baya-on expressed deep concern over the April 16 event, where indigenous costumes and accessories were reportedly used as decorative elements for lechon exhibits.

“The Kaamulan is a solemn and significant celebration of the culture and traditions of the seven tribes of Bukidnon. It is a cultural institution that embodies the dignity, identity, and integrity of our indigenous communities. The misuse of indigenous attire and sacred accessories in contexts that trivialize or commodify them undermines cultural integrity and disrespects ancestral traditions,” Baya-on said.

He stressed that indigenous cultural expressions are not mere ornaments or props but sacred representations of identity, history, and heritage.

“Any act that distorts or exploits these cultural symbols for entertainment or commercial purposes constitutes a violation of the respect owed to our Indigenous Peoples,” he added.

Baya-on also called on event organizers, stakeholders, and the public to exercise cultural sensitivity and uphold respect, dignity, and integrity when engaging with indigenous traditions.

He urged festival organizers and local government units to coordinate closely with indigenous communities and the NCIP before incorporating indigenous elements into public events to ensure proper cultural safeguarding.

The Lechon Festival, held as part of Kaamulan 2026, drew online criticism after roasted pigs were decorated with traditional beaded necklaces. The Municipality of Kibawe was declared the winner of the competition. (melbmadera)
