Sa maong okasyon, gipadangat ni Presidente Marcos ang ka-mahinungdanon sa pagtimbayayong –ilabi na ning panahon sa kalamidad, nga dala sa taas nga hulaw.

Dinhi gipasabot sa presidente nga gamay’ng kantidad man ang ilang madawat apan malaumon kini nga subling makasugod ug makabangon ang mga apektadong pamilya dala sa ting-init.

Ang nadawat nga kantidad i-ayuda ngadto sa mga mag-uuma ug mangingisda nga labing naapektuhan sa El Niño, subay sa gitakda nga gabayan sa pag-apod-apod sa maong cash assistance.

DA joins presidential assistance distribution to El Niño-hit farmers, fishers in NorMin

CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY – Department of Agriculture (DA) Secretary Francisco Tiu P. Laurel, Jr., along with other cabinet members joins President Ferdinand R. Marcos, Jr. in his visit here for the distribution of government assistance to El Niño-hit farmers and fishers in identified areas in Northern Mindanao on May 16, at the International Convention Center

Forty (40) qualified farmers and fisherfolk from Cagayan de Oro City, and the provinces of Misamis Oriental, Camiguin, and Bukidnon received PhP10K each in assistance from the Office of the President.


President Marcos Jr. also handed over PhP10 million worth of El Niño mitigating assistance to the City Government of Cagayan de Oro and the Provincial Government of Camiguin, while the Provincial Government of Misamis Oriental and Bukidnon each received PhP50-million in assistance.


“Ang sadya po namin dito ay upang personal na i-abot sa ating mga lokal na pamahalaan ang Presidential assistance para sa ating mga magsasaka at mangingisda na napinsala, naapektuhan ng El Niño. Ito ay nagkakahalaga ng sampung libong piso na tulong sa mga kwalipikadong magsasaka, mangingisda at mga pamilyang labis na naapektuhan ng tagtuyot na dinadanas natin ngayon. Maliit na halaga po, ngunit umaasa akong magagamit ninyo ito upang makapagsimula muli.” he said.


For his part, DA Secretary Laurel bared that the department under his helm has drummed up its initiatives to ensure that farmers and fishers in Region 10 have access to the agency’s programs and projects such as the provision of various agricultural assistance like agri inputs (vegetable, corn and rice seeds, and fertilizers), machinery and equipment, Fertilizer Discount Vouchers (FDVs), Rice Farmers’ Financial Assistance, among others.


The DA official added that it continues to pursue and complement the efforts of other government agencies to hurdle challenges in ensuring the continued supply of adequate food at economical prices.


“Our initiatives bring together our commitment to strengthened regional efforts to provide more efficient public services.” the agricultural secretary noted, underscoring that convergence is the key to coming up with concrete and sustainable [agricultural] enterprises in the area [NorMin].


Citing the downpour of interventions for NorMin to cushion the impact brought about by El Niño, the president assured that more help is underway from the government to uphold regional development.


“Makakaasa naman ang lahat na hindi lamang sa panahon ng hirap ay nariyan ang inyong gobyerno. Dahil tuloy-tuloy ang mga programang imprastraktura sa inyong lungsod at rehiyon, gaya ng pagpagawa ng mga paliparan, kalsada, at iba pang mga proyekto.” President Marcos furthered.


DA-Regional Field Office 10 headed by Regional Executive Director Jose Apollo Y. Gov’t ramps up key infra projects in northern Mindanao

CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY (May 17, 2024/PIA) – The government is doubling down on infrastructure development in northern Mindanao to drive progress across the entire region

During his speech at the distribution of financial aid for farmers and fisherfolk affected by El Niño in the cities of Iligan and Cagayan de Oro, President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. emphasized key infrastructure projects poised to elevate the region into a global gateway, a leading agricultural center, and a key industrial, tourism, and trade hub in the country.

Among these projects is the P8-billion Panguil Bay Bridge project, linking Tangub City in Misamis Occidental and Tubod in Lanao del Norte. The government has also allocated nearly P2 billion for the implementation of the Iligan City Coastal Bypass Road. These projects are expected to stimulate economic activity and enhance regional accessibility.

“Nariyan din ang patuloy na paggawa ng pagsasaayos ng mga daan, kabilang na ang CDO Coastal Road at CDO Diversion Road upang makatulong sa pagpabilis ng biyahe ng ating mga kababayan, gayon din ang mga pangunahing produkto na sa ating mga merkado,” the President said.

(There are also ongoing road improvements, including the CDO Coastal Road and CDO Diversion Road, which aim to expedite travel for our citizens and transport essential products to our markets.)

Marcos also highlighted plans for expanding, rehabilitating, and developing airports across Northern Mindanao, particularly those in Lumbia, Laguindingan, Ozamiz City, Camiguin, and Bukidnon. The projections indicate that these initiatives will stimulate economic growth and create fresh prospects for the local population.

“Upang mapabuti ang lagay ng transportasyon sa Cagayan de Oro at sa Northern Mindanao, isinasagawa na po natin ang ilang improvement at saka development project. Isa na rito ang pagpapalawig ng Laguindingan Airport na may halagang halos labing tatlong bilyong piso,” he said.

(To enhance transportation in Cagayan de Oro and Northern Mindanao, we are implementing various improvement and development projects. One of these is the expansion of Laguindingan Airport, with a cost of nearly P13 billion.)

The President further reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to fast-track the completion of the P700-million Cagayan de Oro Port Expansion Project, aimed at optimizing port operations and facilitating efficient transport of goods and passengers.

Acknowledging the lessons learned from the COVID-19 pandemic, Marcos stressed the significance of investing in healthcare infrastructure. He said plans are underway to establish trauma and multi-specialty Centers at the Northern Mindanao Medical Center, ensuring continued access to quality healthcare for all residents.

He also expressed support for irrigation and flood control projects aimed at addressing water scarcity and flood issues. “Masaya akong ipaalam na ang Flood Risk Improvement and Management Project para sa Cagayan de Oro River ay atin pasisinayaan. Katuwang ang iba pang irrigation at water project, inaasahang magiging malaki ang ginhawang dala nito sa CDO,” he announced.

(I am pleased to announce the inauguration of the Flood Risk Improvement and Management Project for the Cagayan de Oro River. Alongside other irrigation and water projects, it is expected to greatly alleviate concerns in CDO.)

The president stated that the completion of two solar pump irrigation projects in the municipalities of Salvador and Sapad, which cost nearly P30 million, is the top priority in Lanao del Norte.

As northern Mindanao embarks on the journey of infrastructure development, Marcos reiterates his confidence in the region’s ability to overcome challenges and progress with unity and concerted efforts between the government and its people.

He emphasized that with the collective support, assistance, and unity of the people, coupled with the government’s swift responses to citizens’ needs, their endeavors will succeed in addressing not only drought and water issues but also contributing to the nation’s advancement. Gipahigayon ang pagpasiugda pinaagi sa koordinasyon sa buhatan sa City Agriculture kabahin sa pagpang apod-apod sa tabang pinansyal ngadto sa mga benepisaryo didto sa barangay Violeta Covered Court ning dakbayan niadtong Pebrero 27, 2024.

P100M Korean greenhouses in Bukidnon empower farmers, spark bounty harvest

MALAYBALAY CITY, Bukidnon (29 January 2024/PIA)—The unveiling of P100 million Korean government greenhouse technology in Bukidnon marks a breakthrough in agriculture, sparks a bounty harvest, and improves farming techniques among the province’s high-value crop farmers

Packed with Korean tech, South Korea’s Ministry of Agriculture, Food, and Rural Affairs (MAFRA) donated the multimillion greenhouses to the Department of Agriculture in Region 10 (DA-10) to demonstrate effective methods for growing strawberries, cherry tomatoes, potatoes, leafy vegetables, and high-priced crops in Philippine soil.

In a strawberry farm tour following the turnover ceremony at Northern Mindanao Agricultural Crops and Livestock Research Complex in Dalwangan, Malaybalay City, last December, An Jae-rok, executive director of the Korean Agency of Education, Promotion, and Information Service in Food, Agriculture, Forestry, and Fisheries presented how MAFRA’s Smart farm system gives farmers remote control over their greenhouses.

“In Smart Greenhouse, data is collected daily inside and outside the facility. There are sensors inside to check the amount of carbon dioxide, temperature, and air humidity. There are also sensors outside the greenhouse to check the rainfall, temperature, wind direction, and velocity,” he said.

Jae-rok said farmers need not worry anymore about the unpredictable weather and the backbreaking labor because farmers can easily monitor and adjust greenhouse conditions manually or remotely using the Smart Farm Mobile App with internet connectivity.

“This is unique. It gives us a chance to dream bigger, heaps of perfectly ripened strawberries at a time,” said Joel Rivera, a greenhouse farm adopter and red bell pepper farmer from Bukidnon, as he looked at the vibrant plants inside the facility.

Compared to traditional methods, which usually rely on manual labor and simple controls, greenhouses use modern irrigation and automation systems such as complex environment control and growth development information.

Finding new ways to produce more food

Cora Dumayaca, technical director for research and regulations for DA-Northern Mindanao, said the newly introduced greenhouse technology aims to provide innovative planting to increase productivity and ensure higher profits for Filipino farmers.

“It’s not just technology. It’s empowerment. This high-tech farming also combats climate change worries. Imagine vibrant strawberries thriving alongside climate-resistant leafy greens–that’s the future the government is building,” Dumayaca said.

She explained that Northern Mindanao’s agriculture department shared nearly 30 percent, while Korea’s MAFRA granted more than 70 percent of the project’s total cost.

Dumayaca reported that they had trained 70 Bukidnon farmers, extensionists, and other farmer organizations in nearby provinces on sustainable smart agriculture covering strawberries, cherry tomatoes, leafy vegetables, and potatoes.

“The project went beyond equipping 11 greenhouses with advanced technology. These serve as training hubs and show windows, crafting a Package of Technology (POT) as a roadmap for farmers to boost production through precision agriculture. The DA aims to inspire the next generation to adopt modern farming methods,” she added.

Yong Ho Jung, Korea’s director for international cooperation of MAFRA, said that by establishing smart farms in the Philippines, they have transferred proven Korean-style farm technologies adaptive to the Philippine climate.

“I thanked the Philippine government for its cooperation and interest in the project. These greenhouses mark MAFRA’s first Official Development Assistance (ODA) program on smart agriculture—a testament to the enduring friendship between the two countries. We hope that our collaboration in agri-technology will help to modernize and develop the agro-industry sector through knowledge exchange, as outlined in the Philippine Development Plan 2023-2028, as well as the nationwide dissemination of smart farming in the Philippines,” Jung said.

Korea’s Smart Greenhouses at NMACLRC in Dalwangan, Malaybalay, was launched on April 1, 2022, with 11 state-of-the-art greenhouses across 4,250 square meter fields. Inside, rows of fruit-bearing strawberries and cherry tomatoes, including vibrant leafy greens and potatoes, flourish in precision-designed gardens.

Sila gitumbok nga makadawat sa agricultural ug marine supplies ug uban pa nga ilang magamit sa pagtanum og kape.

Malaybalay City Vet office collaborates with livestock farmers for livestock intensification program

In a proactive move towards strengthening the local livestock industry, the Livestock Production Section of the City Veterinary Office extended a helping hand to the Barangay Caburacanan Livestock Farmers Association. On August 17, 2023, the services was offered to enhance livestock production and management

Dr. Omar T. Cahanap, the Livestock Production Section provided a range of services to the members of the said association. This included the issuance of essential credentials, the provision of livestock insurance, free consultation, and treatment services, along with pregnancy diagnosis for the livestock.

The event took place at the Upper Pulangi Barangay Caburacanan, where the City Veterinary Office’s extension officers from Upper Pulangi, joined to help facilitate the activity. The collaborative effort aimed to equip the livestock farmers with the necessary tools and knowledge to optimize their livestock production.

The initiative aligned with the broader Livestock Intensification program set forth by the city, as a crucial component of the upcoming Malaybalay City Livestock Farmers Federation Program under the leadership of Mayor Jay Warren R. Pabillaran.

Construction begins on trading post in Malaybalay City

The construction of a trading post in Purok 2, Barangay 9, Malaybalay City, has commenced, marking a significant milestone for the city’s economic development. With an allocated budget of Php 5 million, the project aims to enhance the local trading system and promote inclusive food supply chains

The trading post, which is being implemented and funded under the Department of Agriculture’s (DA) Enhanced Kadiwa Inclusive Food Supply Chain Program, will serve as a central hub for farmers, vendors, and consumers to engage in trade.

SOV Builders and Construction Supply Corporation, the contractor responsible for the project, has been awarded a contract amounting to Php 3,937,554.24. The project is expected to be completed within the stipulated timeframe of 135 calendar days.

The Notice to Proceed was issued on June 23, 2023, giving the contractor the green light to initiate construction activities. The trading post is expected to be fully operational by November 4, 2023.

The trading post will facilitate transactions between farmers and buyers and promote direct consumer engagement. This will give consumers access to fresh, locally sourced produce while supporting the livelihoods of small-scale farmers in the city.

The construction of the trading post aligns with the government’s commitment to promoting sustainable agriculture and inclusive economic development. Bukidnon solon pushes for bamboo as cash crop

CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY – The bamboo industry in Northern Mindanao region is a rich untapped source of raw materials for the construction industry, Bukidnon 1st District Rep. Jose Manuel Alba has said

In an interview on June 13, 2023, Alba said he and other bamboo industry leaders in Mindanao are engaged in ongoing information dissemination to make bamboo a source of livelihood for building materials.

He earlier filed House of Representatives Bill 7105, or the proposed Philippine Bamboo Industry Act.

“Shifting to bamboo as building material instead of wood will also help the environment in the long run, as it will lessen the cutting of more trees,” he said.

Bukidnon alone has about 2 million “bamboo stands,” which are ready for harvest to become raw materials, he said.

A supporter of Alba’s bill is Robert Palomares, the proprietor of Homebiz Crafts based in Iligan City, who has been using bamboo materials for making furniture and plywood for clients since 2014.

He said he has been sourcing bamboo materials from Manolo Fortich, Bukidnon.

“Bamboo can become a good source of additional income for farmers and even residents who have a backyard space for growing bamboo,” Palomares said.

Because bamboo is a grass species, it can sprout new trunks after cutting the old ones for production.

Palomares said the variety currently used in production is the giant bamboo species.

In this city, the bamboo processing firm, Rizome Bamboo, has been providing bamboo supplies to clients across the country since 2021.

Russel Smith, the firm’s president and chief executive officer, said they are planning to plant an additional 1.5 million “bamboo stands” throughout Mindanao, which they will also buy back from farmers and growers to meet the production demands. (Nef Luczon/PNA)
