Authorities investigating deaths of warty pigs in Bukidnon protected area

MALAYBALAY CITY — At least nine warty pigs (Sus philippensis) died from still unknown causes within the Mt. Kitanglad Range Natural Park last year, the chief of the Protected Area Management Office of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources-Bukidnon said on January 31, 2023

The warty pigs, which are classified as vulnerable by the International Union for the Conservation of Nature, were found dead in three areas—Barangay Kaatuan in Lantapan town, Barangay San Vicente in Baungon town, and Barangay Mapayag in Malaybalay City—according to Protected Area Superintendent Merlita L. Tabamo.

Five of them were found dead in Kaatuan, three in September and two in November 2022. Two each were found dead in San Vicente and Mapayag, Tabamo said.

She noted that all of the nine animals showed no wounds and other indications that they were physically harmed.

Tabamo said her office had reported the incidents to the eight local government units around Mt. Kitanglad Range and Gov. Rogelio Neil Roque.

She also instructed the Kitanglad Guard Volunteers to be on alert for similar incidents during their monthly patrols.

The official added that personnel from the Provincial Veterinary Office have offered to help identify the cause of the deaths of the warty pigs. Aside from examining the carcasses of the pigs, they will also conduct tests on live ones.

Tabamo cited that based on their monitoring the warty pig population in Mt. Kitanglad Range increased in 2020 and 2021 but showed a decline in 2022.

She said if the deaths continued, it could affect the local population of the warty pigs, which play an important role in conservation by dispersing the seeds of some plant species.

She said they could not say for now that the warty pigs were infected with the African Swine Fever or another kind of virus.

Bukidnon was not included as a hotspot of the ASF after the disease infected several hogs in parts of Mindanao starting in 2019.

But as a safety measure, DENR-Bukidnon has issued an order banning the entry of swine, pork, and pork products into the park effective Feb. 1.

DA-NorMin confers P3-M farm tractor to Baungon town cooperative

BAUNGON, BUKIDNON – Eyed to boost the land preparation activities of corn and cassava farmers for better crop yield and favorable soil environment, the agriculture department in Northern Mindanao (DA-10) under the management of OIC-RED Carlene C. Collado, turned over recently P3 million worth of corn-funded farm tractor to Phil. Agro Multi-Purpose Cooperative (PAMC) in barangay Imbatug, this town

Held at a PAMC residential area in Mandu, the certificate of turnover was handed over by DA-10 through Corn focal person Richan D. Lacanaria to the Local Government of Bukidnon headed by Mayor Rogelio D. Jaraula and Municipal Agriculturist Janel C. Redondo, and to PAMC manager Deodato V. Galaura, Jr., in the presence of local and coop officials and members, and other regional and municipal agri staff.

According to PAMC manager Galaura, the conferred farm machinery is for priority use of the 56-membered coop engaged in the rotational farming of corn and cassava, covering 94 hectares and a potential area of around 30 hectares.

Likewise, the coop official added that it would enable them to thoroughly conduct their land preparation activities, paving way for more efficiency in the ensuing stages of their corn and cassava production.

“Kung tsada ang pag land prep, mosunod na dayon ang uban operation [in farming]. Dako kaayo kini nga katabang sa pag-abot ani na makinarya,” the manager remarked.

Meanwhile, being at the helm of Baungon town, Mayor Jaraula conveyed his gratitude to the agency, as this is a meaningful addition to PAMC.

“Dako ako pasalamat sa DA-10 sa pagtugyan niini nga tractor kay dako kini’g makatabang satong mga mag-uuma. Since grant mani, wala may nagasto, savings na ninyo ni. Puhon, ipakita ninyo sa DA kung pila ang inyong nakita.” the local chief executive said, posing a challenge to the coop.

Similarly hoping for the advancement of the farmers’ group, Baungon MA Redondo reminded the beneficiaries to set aside funds for the repair and maintenance of the farm machinery at the same time accord special rates for the coop members in its utilization.

For the agency’s part, Corn coordinator Lacanaria extended his congratulations to PAMC for being one of the unit recipients, factoring in the limited funds and overwhelming requests for the availment of a farm tractor.

“As a government investment, hopefully, the value of the project mabalik sa atoang cooperative by using it and engaging it into a business enterprise [through servicing],” he pointed out.

He pinned his hope that the coop will sustain itself in growing corn and cassava, and serve as a ‘big brother’ for other nearby farmers’ cooperatives, associations in their locality, and other adjacent towns, becoming a staunch partner of DA in its bid towards food security and sustainability. Utility personnel sa Liboran, Baungon gitigbas

Gitigbas patay sa wala mailang suspek ang utility personnel sa Brgy. Liboran, Baungon.

Sumala sa taho sa kapolisan, ang biktima nailang si Nestor Prequencia, 33, ulitawo, residente sa Purok 3, Liboran.

Napalgan ang iyang patay’ng lawas pasado alas 6:00 sa buntag sa Pebrero 9 atbang sa Barangay Hall sa Liboran.

Nakaangkon sa grabing mga samad tinigbasan sa lawas ang biktima hinungdan sa iyang hinanaling kamatayon.

Ang patay’ng lawas sa biktima gidala sa St. Bernard Funeral Homes sa Purok 2, Liboran.
