Mindanao coffee farmers sweep PCQC 2023

ILIGAN CITY — Farmers from Mindanao garnered all 12 winning entries in the Arabica category during Sunday’s awarding ceremonies of the Philippine Coffee Quality Competition 2023 held at the World Trade Center in Pasay City, according to announcements from the Department of Trade and Industry offices in the Northern Mindanao and Davao regions

Garnering the top prize with a cupping score of 86 was Manolito Garces’ natural-processed coffee, with cupping notes of pineapple, mango, black currant, and honey. Garces is from New Eden, Pangantucan in Bukidnon.

Second was Jhon Lawrence dela Cerna, of the Balutakay Coffee Farmers’ Association (BACOFA) in Bansalan, Davao del Sur, with a score of 85.75; third was Dione F. Ellaga, also of Bansalan, 85.41.

Fourth place was Junmar Gunayan, of the MILALITTRA Farmers Agricultural Cooperative (MILFACO), of Bukidnon, 85.03; fifth was Rogelio Gonzales, also of BACOFA in Bansalan, 85; and sixth was Arnold Pina, of the Bayanihan Millennium Multipurpose Cooperative (BMMPC) in Pangantucan, Bukidnon, 84.97.

Completing the top 12 were Rogelio R. Balacuit, of Amai Manabilang in Lanao del Sur; Cecilia G. Cavalida, Davao del Sur; Rosebele Sulatan, MILFACO; Cherry Gil Cabanday, Davao del Sur; Roquita dela Cerna, Davao del Sur; and Lendilou F. Loon, Davao del Sur.

Arabica coffee is considered the superior coffee and fetches higher prices for the farmers.

In the Robusta category, Ilocos Sur farmers dominated the competition, winning 10 of the top 12, according to the DTI-Ilocos Region.

First place was Vilma Lapasan, of the Tirad Pass Growers Association, Gregorio del Pilar, Ilocos Sur, with a cupping score of 85.22. Her coffee had notes of vanilla, pineapple, berries, and raisin.

Two farmers from Sultan Kudarat province also made it to the winning entries—Reyjohn A. Basco, 8th place; and Robert James Gacayan, 10th.

Second was Mabini Ubuan, of San Elias Coffee Growers Association in Sigay, with a score of 85; third was Juana Bitongan, also of Gregorio del Pilar, 84.38; fourth was Marietta Lidem, of Sigay, 83.94; and fifth was Jean Apalet, also of Sigay, Ilocos Sur, 83.5.

The rest of the winners from Ilocos Sur were Byron Daplayan, 6th; Silvestra Villegas, 7th; Erlinda Dao-ayan, 9th; Jordan Dalida, 11th; and Marielle Gannad, 12th. (MindaNews)

DA-10 stages workshop to bolster coffee industry in Mindanao

MALAYBALAY CITY, BUKIDNON — In an effort to strengthen support for the coffee farmers and industry in Mindanao, the Department of Agriculture – Regional Field Office (DA RFO-10) headed by OIC-Regional Executive Director Carlene C. Collado, in partnership with Nestlé Philippines, Inc., held a workshop on January 16-20, 2023 to finalize the Mindanao Coffee Project (MCP), this city

Through the MCP, the agency aims to establish a globally competitive, sustainable, and product-diversified coffee industry in Mindanao to benefit local farmers, traders, manufacturers, and exporters.

In her welcome message, DA-10 OIC-Regional Technical Director for Research and Regulations Cora A. Dumayaca thanked the agency’s partners from the public and private sectors for the support they continuously extend to coffee farmers in Mindanao.

High-Value Crops Development Program (HVCDP) and National Urban and Peri-urban Agriculture (NUPAP) Director Gerald Glenn F. Panganiban, Ph.D enjoined the participants to actively participate in said event, as the workshop’s inputs contribute to the impactful work the agency does for coffee farmers in the country.

Meanwhile, Nestlé Philippines, Inc. Senior Vice President and Corporate Affairs Head Jose Uy III reaffirmed their company’s commitment to empowering coffee farmers in Mindanao, particularly those from the provinces of Bukidnon and Sultan Kudarat – two of the country’s leading coffee producers.

The five-day workshop highlighted proposed projects by the University of Southern Mindanao and Nestlé Philippines, Inc., which tackled the productivity of Robusta coffee to organic and inorganic fertilizers, fertilizer support for coffee farmers, and the establishment and improvement of integrated coffee centers in Sultan Kudarat and Bukidnon, respectively.

During the said event, representatives from DA regional offices 9 to 13 also presented their plans and upcoming projects for FY 2023 and 2024. They underscored the Philippine Coffee Industry Roadmap 2021-2025 and the Coconut Farmers and Industry Development Plan.

As a showcase of its ‘regenerative’ agricultural farming practices, Nestlé Philippines, led by its SVP Uy, also facilitated a tour of the Bukidnon Integrated Coffee Center (BICC) and its model coffee farms in Maramag town.

Ex-broadcaster running for councilor shot dead in Sultan Kudarat province

KORONADAL CITY (MindaNews / 12 January) – A former radio commentator who is running as councilor for a municipality in Sultan Kudarat province was shot dead in Tacurong City Wednesday morning, a city official confirmed.

The victim was identified as Jaynard Angeles, former station manager of Radyo ni Juan in Tacurong.

Police said he was shot around 10:30 a.m. in Barangay Carmen. Witnesses interviewed by police said Angeles was shot in the head with a pistol that caused his instantaneous death. Three gunshots reportedly rang near a car wash station.

Local police have not yet issued a statement pending an ongoing investigation.

Allan Freno, Tacurong information officer, said that Angeles has resigned from the radio station to run as councilor of Lambayong town in Sultan Kudarat.

“He was a hard-hitting radio commentator, and his criticisms did not spare politicians,” Freno said in a phone interview.

Angeles was running under the Partido Federal ng Pilipinas.

In October 2019, the station manager of Radyo ni Juan in Tacurong, Benjie Caballero, was also shot outside his house in Tacurong City. He died a month later at a local hospital where he was confined.
