CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY — The Department of Health Northern Mindanao (DOH-10) is urging women to undergo regular health screenings, emphasizing the importance of early disease detection for long-term health protection
Dr. Vaniza E. Bagolbol, medical officer of DOH-10’s Non-Communicable Diseases Cluster, said many people today develop lifestyles that increase the risk of serious illnesses.
“Nowadays, because of globalization and rapid urbanization, many people have developed less healthy lifestyles. This can lead to non-communicable diseases, including cancer. Among women, we are seeing an increasing number of cases of breast and cervical cancer,” Bagolbol said.
The DOH recommends healthy habits such as maintaining a normal weight, eating nutritious foods, avoiding smoking and excessive alcohol intake, and exercising regularly.
Bagolbol said these diseases can often be prevented or managed more effectively if detected early.
“Through screening, we can detect possible problems before they become serious. If cancer is detected early, the chances of successful treatment are much higher, and the prognosis is much better,” Bagolbol said.
Women aged 30 and older should undergo regular screenings, regardless of symptoms.
“Some women hesitate to get screened because they feel healthy or have no symptoms. But we want to remind everyone that many diseases, including cancer, may not show symptoms in the early stages. That’s why screening is still important,” Bagolbol said.
The DOH also encourages women to perform breast self-examinations at least once a month to check for possible signs of illness.
“If you notice any changes in your breasts, such as lumps or unusual swelling, don’t hesitate to consult a doctor right away. Instead of relying on Google or asking others, it’s always best to consult a healthcare professional,” Bagolbol added.
To support preventive care, the government continues to expand access to healthcare through free services, including vaccinations, screenings, and medical assistance programs.
Under the PhilHealth Yaman ng Kalusugan Program, women can access free cancer screening tests, including mammograms (P2,610) and breast ultrasounds (P1,350), reinforcing the government’s commitment to women’s health.
As the country observes National Women’s Month, the DOH reminded women of the importance of these tests.
“Taking these simple steps today can help protect your future. To all women out there, stay informed, especially when it comes to your health. Visit your nearest health facility and take advantage of available screening services,” Bagolbol said. (GDA/PIA-10)
