MALAYBALAY CITY — The city government of Malaybalay and the Bukidnon State University (BukSU) launched late last month the Starlink satellite internet project to expand digital access across the city’s 46 barangays
The project, launched October 29 at the BukSU Gymnasium, aims to improve digital infrastructure and connect schools, government offices, and remote communities.
Mayor Jay Warren R. Pabillaran said the partnership supports the city’s initiative for smart governance and digital empowerment.
“This initiative marks a turning point for Malaybalay. Starlink will enable real-time data sharing, improve public services, and make online communication accessible even in distant areas. It ensures that no community is left behind as we advance digital transformation,” Pabillaran said.
Starlink uses low-earth orbit satellites to transmit internet signals directly to receivers on the ground, removing the need for fiber cables or cell towers. This setup allows access in mountain barangays similar to that in urban areas.
Pabillaran said the project links areas that previously lacked stable internet, giving residents and offices equal access to online services and economic activities.
BukSU President Joy M. Mirasol said the university supports the project as part of its commitment to innovation and inclusive learning.
“Digitalization is not just about convenience—it’s about creating equal opportunities for all. Through partnerships like this, we can make technology truly inclusive and transformative,” Mirasol said.
City officials said the Starlink project positions Malaybalay as a digital leader in Bukidnon by integrating governance, education, and research. They added that it could serve as a model for other local governments seeking to enhance public services and bridge digital gaps.
“Through this collaboration, Malaybalay and BukSU show how local government units and universities can combine resources and expertise to bring technology closer to people and build a connected, knowledge-driven community,” Pabillaran said. (Maryjoy S. Magsayo/PIA-10/Bukidnon)
