CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY (March 24, 2026) — The 4th Infantry ‘Diamond’ Division (4ID) said the number of active communist insurgents in Northern Mindanao has fallen to 18, and 22 in Caraga, down from what officials say were thousands in previous years

“This is another milestone for the Philippine Army, nga nahimo na nga partner and a solid institution for our people in the protection of peace and security as well as development,” said 4ID Chief of Staff for Civil-Military Operations Col. Ricky L. Canatoy during the March 19 Kapihan sa PIA.

The reduction is credited to sustained military operations and cooperation with government agencies under the End Local Communist Armed Conflict (ELCAC) program. Programs such as the Enhanced Comprehensive Local Integration Program (ECLIP) offer former rebels livelihood support, housing, and social services, enabling hundreds to return to civilian life and participate in community development.

Meanwhile, 4ID celebrated the Philippine Army’s 129th founding anniversary with activities including tree-planting, audiovisual presentation contests, and a capability challenge under the theme “Ang Inyong Matatag na Hukbong Katihan.”

The unit also marked National Women’s Month by highlighting women’s roles in military operations. An all-female squad challenge demonstrated their warfighting and operational readiness.

“The activity aims to inspire more women to join the military and demonstrate their vital role in national defense,” Canatoy said.

With internal security largely under control, 4ID said it will focus on strengthening external defense, improving coordination with the Philippine Navy and Air Force to secure territorial waters and respond to emerging threats.

Canatoy said investment in security is essential to economic growth and national development.

As the army celebrates its 129th year, 4ID reaffirmed its commitment to safeguard the region and the nation, urging government agencies and the public to continue collaborating to sustain peace and progress. (JAKA/PIA-10)
