DON CARLOS, Bukidnon — Department of Transportation (DOTr) Secretary Giovanni Lopez led the first aircraft landing at Bukidnon Domestic Airport on January 30, confirming the long-delayed hub is ready for commercial flight
The touchdown of a twin-engine airplane carrying Lopez and Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines (CAAP) officials confirmed the ₱2.8-billion project’s shift from a construction site to a functional runway.
Once operational, the airport will cut travel time and spur trade across central Mindanao, ending nearly five years of construction since its 2021 groundbreaking.
Lopez proceeded to inspect major facilities, including the passenger terminal, runway extension, cargo terminal, control tower, and fire station.
He said the inspection followed a directive from President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. to expedite the Bukidnon Airport Development Project to ensure immediate benefits for passengers and tourists.
“The President instructed us to fast-track this airport as it is vital for Mindanao’s connectivity and economic growth. Like our other regional hubs, this facility will be modern, ensuring a comfortable and seamless experience,” Lopez said.
Aiming for a year-end launch, the transport chief set November 30, 2026, as the deadline for the completion of all facilities.
“Meeting the November 30 deadline is critical for launching turboprop operations by December. While the 149-hectare facility is designed for Airbus A320 jets, initial phases will focus on smaller propeller aircraft to hit the year-end target. Larger jet services are slated to follow in the first quarter of 2027 once all support facilities are fully integrated,” Lopez said.
He assured Don Carlos Mayor Ma. Victoria Ontanillas-Pizarro that the DOTr and CAAP will collaborate with the local government to resolve pending administrative hurdles, including right-of-way acquisitions. On-site project manager Crisogono Llido Jr. confirmed that most vertical structures are set for completion by the third quarter of this year.
Lopez said the project includes ₱320 million for ancillary facilities, part of the government’s effort to expand infrastructure and air travel access in Mindanao. (BGE/PIA 10-Bukidnon)
