24 NorMin LGUs sign with DOST for disaster preparedness modernization

CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY – Twenty-four local government units (LGUs) in Region 10 (Northern Mindanao) simultaneously signed a memorandum of agreement (MOA) Friday with the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) for modernized projects on disaster preparations

The MOA signing formed part of the culmination activities for the Mindanao leg of the Oct. 4-6 “Handa Pilipinas” Innovations in Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Exposition 2023 held in this city.

It provides LGUs access to disaster risk reduction technologies and innovations developed by Filipino inventors and researchers.

Meanwhile, the DOST will provide technical assistance in creating and executing disaster risk reduction and management (DRRM) initiatives.

During her speech, Director Romela Ratilla of DOST-10 said the signing is just the start of many future engagements as the agency aims to partner with more LGUs to promote science, technology, and innovation as tools against disasters.

“Let us persistently work to make the Philippines more innovative, safe, (disaster) resilient, and prepared for future uncertainties,” she said.

The agency also pledged to provide capacity building, training, and technical support to LGUs for disaster preparedness and mitigation. This includes early warning systems and hazard assessment platforms with various programs and applications developed by scholars and inventors.

OneRicePH held in Valencia

VALENCIA CITY, BUKIDNON – The Department of Agriculture – Regional Field Office 10 (DA-RFO 10) through its Research Division, conducted recently a field day on OneRicePH: Expanded On-farm Technology Demonstration for the wet season, in Barangay Kahapunan

According to PhilRice Central Office representative Pinklet Athen Canilang, OneRicePH is a collaborative project of the Philippine Rice Research Institute (PhilRice), International Rice Research Institute (IRRI), University of the Philippines Los Baños (UPLB), DA, and the local government units (LGUs) to unify rice breeding dissemination strategies that will increase genetic gain and improve grain quality and nutrition.

“The project aims for the development of a product concept for target rice market segments and the establishment of a national breeding network,” she said.

With a total area of 5.1 hectares implemented by co-operators, comprising of a seed grower and three farmers, said techno demos showcased inbred rice varieties such as NSIC Rc 512, NSIC Rc 506, and NSIC Rc 508, which are intended for irrigated lowland ecosystem.

The performance of the said varieties as a result of also employing optimum nutrient management and associated rice cultivation technologies, was witnessed and evaluated by farmer representatives of the different 13 Irrigators’ Associations in the city.

Initially, the results of the participatory varietal selection were presented, yielding higher results compared to the targeted 7.50 tons per hectare.

Maridith A. Flores, senior science research specialist and OneRicePH focal person of DA-10 remarked that the activity also paves the way to showcase the benefits of using recommended rice varieties and their yield potential, streamlining the country’s rice breeding strategies and variety dissemination.

Likewise, supporting the activity are Research Division chief Lorena V. Duna and Provincial Operations Center-Bukidnon chief Janet D. Lopez, DVM of DA-10, Mayor Azucena P. Huervas, City Councilor Rogelio P. Hera, committee on agriculture, and other City LGU Valencia officials and staff. (DA RFO-10

City Vet Hosts Training on Swine Artificial Insemination Course

The City Government of Malaybalay through the City Veterinary Office – Livestock Production Section in partnership with the Department of Agriculture – Agricultural Training Institute –Region 10 (ATI-R10) hosted the Regional Scale Level of Training on Swine Artificial Insemination and Basic Health and Nutrition, a first of its kind and a first-time in the Philippines to be hosted by an LGU

Training to bolster livestock swine production and to ensure robust regional food security was one of the objectives of the training. It was also conducted to utilize the unmatched capabilities and technical expertise of the Malaybalay City Livestock Production personnel.

The 10-day training which started last September 11, 2023, and will end on September 23, 2023, was held at Veranda Hotel and in Malaybalay City Livestock Production, Breeding and Training Center for the immersion.

Mr. Jeric Cabatac and Ms. Gia Joy Lustero from the ATI-10 facilitated the training together with the personnel from the City Veterinary Office headed by City Veterinarian Dr. Michele C. Miquiabas, Alexis Flores II – the Center Chief, Dr. Omar T. Cahanap, Livestock Production Veterinarian and Phille Rae M. Bonggo, Training Coordinator.

Regional-wide participants came from the agriculture office of the different municipalities of Bukidnon, Tubod, Lanao del Norte, Tangub City, El Salvador City, Tudela, Misamis Occidental, and Cagayan de Oro City. DA, Bukidnon LGUs craft 5-year rice industry dev’t plan

CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY – The Department of Agriculture – RFO 10 through Regional Executive Director Carlene C. Collado facilitates the crafting of the 2024-2028 Masagana Rice Industry Development Program (MRIDP) plan for the province of Bukidnon

Chona H. Nacalaban, Rice Program focal person of DA-10 explained, “The MRIDP is formulated to address the present challenges in the rice industry and it is set to improve agricultural production in the country to achieve the government target of 97 percent rice self-sufficiency by 2028.”

Following the program’s briefing earlier this August, the DA-10’s Rice Program led the convergence planning workshop of OneDA, comprising ATI, PhilMech, NIA, and PhilRice which seeks to create a rice industry in the region that is thriving, resilient, and sustainable while boosting the productivity of farmers.

The program was designed to prioritize the welfare of Filipino farmers, boost the rice value chain, and improve agricultural production across the Philippines.

The Provincial Agriculture’s Office of Bukidnon together with the 21 local government units (LGUs) prepared their plans focusing on markets, innovations, scale, mainstreaming, and outcome.

The said plan will determine solutions to pressing issues on rice which include farm income, productivity, supply of rice, and competitiveness in the world market.

With the existence of the farm clusters in Bukidnon, the government can easily provide its interventions from inputs (seeds, fertilizers), machinery, and even marketing assistance.

To work on the detailed integrated plans, there is a need for innovative approaches to engage farmers and the private sector.

Citing the existence of the province-led Agriculture and Fisheries Extension Systems (PAFES) in the province will aid in the implementation of the program.

The provinces of Bukidnon and Lanao del Norte will be pilot-tested for the program, being the rice producers in Northern Mindanao. Bukidnon, the region’s top rice-producing province has an annual production of 295.686 metric tons in CY 2022 based on PSA with a sufficiency level of 216.51 percent.

In terms of physical area, Bukidnon has a total area of 40,799 hectares both for irrigated and rainfed areas, or 56.48 percent of Region 10’s total physical area of 75,883 hectares. (DA RFO-10

Statistical exhibit opens PSA’s 10th-anniversary celebration in NorMin

CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY – To continue providing statistical services to the people in the region, the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA)-10 kicked off its 10th anniversary celebration in Northern Mindanao with a statistical exhibit on September 5

With the theme “PSA@10: Providing Quality Service through Digital Transformation,” the celebration aims to foster and celebrate PSA’s achievements over the past decade. It also emphasizes the agency’s enhanced cooperation and partnerships with other government agencies and local government units.

As another year begins for PSA, Janith C. Aves, PSA-10 officer-in-charge, assured the public that PSA’s data dissemination and civil registration functions will be further enhanced with innovative approaches. It includes the integration of the latest technology into data-gathering procedures.

“PSA strives to implement strategies to improve using the latest state-of-the-art technologies to deliver quality output. It proves that PSA also embraces innovations to provide better quality services, not just to deliver its functions but to serve the Philippines by embracing the modern world,” she said.

Cagayan de Oro City Councilor lawyer James Judith said in a message that as society moves toward a data-driven culture, the role of PSA-10 has become increasingly vital to policy-making, similar to that of the National Economic and Development Authority.

As part of the celebration, PSA-10 offers a nine-day civil registration and PhilSys ID application services to complement the statistical exhibit to streamline the processing, reduce the usual processing time at the main office, and accommodate walk-in inquiries for added convenience to mallgoers.

95 Football Clubs join 4ID’s 3rd Diamond Cup Football Festival

Football enthusiasts coming from different parts of the country gathered as 95 Football Clubs vied to become best of the best in the recently concluded 3rd Diamond Football Cup Festival as part of the celebration of the city’s Higalaay Festival 2023 held at the 4ID Headquarters, Camp Evangelista, Patag, Cagayan de Oro City on August 26-27, 2023

Said activity aims to provide an avenue for athletes to showcase their prowess in football while simultaneously building their physical fitness, honing their skills, and cultivating values that go beyond the boundaries of the field.

The participants competed in seven (7) different categories – Mixed Under 9, Mixed Under 12, Boys under 16, Women’s Open, Men’s Open, Above 35 and the Above 45.

Councilor Malvern “Bernie Bitok-Bitok” Esparcia, the Cagayan de Oro City Council’s Chairperson for the Committee on Sports served as the Guest of Honor and Speaker during the opening ceremony. In his message, He highlighted the significant role of sports in the character development of the youth especially in these modern times when children are into mobile games and other sorts of technologies. He also emphasized the vital role of the parents and coaches in molding and teaching the children the true meaning of camaraderie, friendship, and sportsmanship.
