Strategic Pedagogy: Unleashing Effective Teaching Techniques for Student Success
Alberto B. Felisilda
Teacher III
Old Damulog National High School

In the realm of education, the way we teach holds a key role in the success of our students. Strategic Pedagogy is an approach that offers a practical guide for educators aiming to enhance their teaching techniques and support student achievement. It goes beyond the basics, combining careful planning, flexibility, and an understanding of diverse learning styles

Strategic Pedagogy is essentially about being intentional and creative in teaching. Educators who follow this approach plan their lessons thoughtfully, considering not only the subject matter but also the unique needs and backgrounds of their students. This careful planning sets the stage for creating an inclusive learning environment where every student, no matter their learning style, can feel engaged and supported.

What makes Strategic Pedagogy effective is its ability to adapt to the changing needs of students. It acknowledges that each classroom is filled with diverse perspectives and encourages teachers to adjust their methods to ensure that every student understands the material. It recognizes that effective teaching is about tailoring the approach to fit the students, not using a one-size-fits-all method.

Strategic Pedagogy is successful because it focuses on cultivating critical thinking skills and a love for learning in students. By including interactive activities, collaborative projects, and real-world applications, educators using this approach create an environment where curiosity is sparked, and learning goes beyond the classroom.

In summary, Strategic Pedagogy is a guide for educators to unlock their students’ potential. By combining thoughtful planning, flexibility, and a commitment to fostering a love for learning, this approach stands as a foundation for effective teaching, ultimately leading to unmatched student success.

Mindanao LGUs bring home students after blast; Marawi extends help

CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY (Dec. 4, 2023, 8:49 am) – Some local government units (LGUs) in Mindanao on Sunday extended their support to their residents studying at Mindanao State University (MSU) in Marawi City, Lanao del Sur

After the MSU Marawi campus suspended classes following an explosion that killed four and injured 50 people, several students sought assistance for transportation back to their hometowns.
Meanwhile, in a statement, the MSU Emergency Task Force said they were coordinating with police and military authorities, as well as meeting with Marawi CDRMMO and the provincial government, as it emphasized there were no recommendations for campus lockdown and evacuation of students.
“We urge the university constituents to remain calm but cautious. We urge the students to remain in their dormitories, boarding houses, and homes inside the campus until further notice,” the Task Force said.
Iligan City Mayor Frederick Siao ordered the City Disaster Risk Reduction Management Office (CDRRMO) to provide vehicles to assist students out of the campus.
“All students can take the ride even non-residents of Iligan,” he said.
The first batch of 60 students arrived in Iligan City past 3 p.m. and were given initial relief by the City Social Welfare and Development.
Siao also issued an executive order setting up checkpoints on key highways in Iligan.
Mayor Rolando Uy of this city, meanwhile, tasked its CDRRMO to dispatch a team to get students bound for the city and nearby towns.
Mayor Lemuel Meyrick Acosta of Oroquieta City, Misamis Occidental said there were 42 students expected to be brought home.
Misamis Occidental Governor Henry Oaminal Sr. also mobilized transportation to evacuate students with two buses on standby.
The municipalities of Wao, Lanao del Sur, and Gingoog City, Misamis Oriental are also coordinating with students wishing to be brought home.
The province of Zamboanga del Sur responded to a post on social media from a student who was requesting to be transported back home.
In the aftermath of the blast, the campus community and Marawi City residents also provided relief.
Maruhom-Jalaluddin Ronsing, Education Program Specialist at MSU Shariah Center, shared photographs of faculty, staff, and students volunteering to prepare food for those who remained on the campus and inside their dormitories.
Business owners also offered free food to MSU students afraid to come out, while other residents offered their homes as temporary refuge.
Marawi City Mayor Majul Gandamra said the incident should not be allowed to undermine the good relationship that exists between Muslim and Christian communities in the city.
“Our city has long been a beacon of peaceful coexistence and harmony, and we will not allow such acts of violence to overshadow our collective commitment to peace and unity,” he said.
Gandamra also urged the public to exercise caution and refrain from spreading unverified information about the incident.
He said the public must rely on official reports from the authorities to obtain accurate information.
Lanao del Sur 1st District Rep. Ziaur-Rahman Alonto-Adiong said its office would extend medical assistance to the injured victims.
“We will work closely with the PNP (Philippine National Police) and the AFP (Armed Forces of the Philippines) to sort this out and arrest the perpetrators behind this barbaric attack,” he said. (Nef Luczon and Leah Agonoy/PNA)

CMU-BTL tension arises anew

MALAYBALAY CITY (Nov. 22, 2023) – Another tension has arisen between the security personnel of Central Mindanao University (CMU) and members of a farmer’s group called Buffalo, Tamaraw, Limus (BTL) on November 21 afternoon

The commotion occurred near Sayre Highway, Purok 21-A, Dologon, Maramag, when CMU security personnel attempted to drive away farmers who had been erecting temporary structures within the university’s gated area, particularly at the university’s Beef Cattle Project.

According to the report, four people were injured as a result of the beating with sticks and stone-throwing that erupted between the two groups. As reported, one of them was CMU security personnel.

The tension subsided only when personnel from Maramag Municipal Police Station (MMPS) arrived.

The university administration has released a memorandum advising its faculty members of the implementation of a flexible/outcomes-based Teaching/Learning Arrangement the day following the incident to protect the safety and security of the students.

BTL members have infiltrated, occupied, and built shanties in the Beef Cattle Project area fronting the Sayre Highway ahead of the 2023 Barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan Election (BSKE).

CMU’s agriculture, veterinary, and forestry students would use the area as a laboratory.

To recall, on October 31, 2023, CMU personnel removed part of the shanties in the region with the presence of police and soldiers, but BTL members resisted. Later, the Mayor of Maramag and his Vice Mayor arrived, and a discussion took place.

DOLE-10, BukSU job fair yields 51 HOTS

MALAYBALAY CITY – The Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE)-10 Job Fair hosted by Bukidnon State University (BukSU) recently generated 51 Hired-On-The-Spot (HOTS) at the University Gymnasium

Through its Bukidnon Provincial Field Office (Buk PFO), DOLE-10 and BukSU collaborated to help graduates and current students find employment.

DOLE-Bukidnon Chief Raul Valmores said the HOTS would start their new careers in their respective workplaces. Employers who hired the applicants have been in service-related fields like financial services and business process outsourcing.

Additionally, HOTS Mariel Cantabeja considered the opportunity and the experience to be an honor.

“I already prepared for my trip here and decided which company I would like to apply to. My goal was to get a job. I was thrilled to be hired quickly after applying to my top choice. I’ll bring some good news home with me, she said.

Like many other applicants, Mariel walked in as a hopeful candidate among the 269 job seekers and secured one of the 2,370 available positions offered by 37 local and overseas agencies. Centro Supersales, Inc. hired her as a cashier.

“It was hard being unemployed. I wanted to support my family’s needs. That’s why I decided to join this job fair,” Cantabeja said.

Similarly, Kristine Jean Laoganas, one of the HOTS applicants, expressed her joy, saying, “I am thrilled to have secured a position as a virtual assistant at ACS VA Holdings. I had envisioned applying for numerous job openings to seize this exceptional opportunity. After applying to multiple companies, I finally received the news of being hired.”

Valmores said the DOLE’s Job Fair enhances unemployed individuals’ access to job opportunities.

“It not only extends its reach to individuals who are poor, unemployed, and displaced in rural areas but also offers a convenient platform for job seekers to connect with potential employers. It reduces the necessity for expensive transportation and other expenses when traveling to the city or areas where job vacancies are available,” he said.

He explained that job fairs are also a way to support anti-illegal recruitment campaigns by enabling jobseekers’ access to legitimate employers/recruitment agencies.

The job fair also generated 206 near-hires, referring to job seekers who have been conditionally hired but still need to submit additional or missing requirements or may be required to attend further interviews or exams. (DOLE-10-Bukidnon Provincial Field Office/PIA-10/Bukidnon)

Motivating Students To Love Math

One of the most difficult aspects of becoming a teacher is learning how to motivate your students. It is one of the most important. Students who are not motivated will not learn effectively. They won’t retain information, won’t participate, and may even become disrupted students. Students may be unmotivated; they feel that they have no interest in the subject. It may eventually come to light that students who appeared unmotivated actually have difficulty learning and need special attention while motivating them can be difficult.

Motivated students are more excited to learn and participate; as teachers, we need to do different and participate; as teachers, we need to do different strategies. Motivating students to be enthusiastically receptive is one of the most aspects of mathematics instruction and critical aspect in any curriculum. Effective teachers focus attention on the less interested students as well as the motivated ones. When the students are challenged intellectually, react with enthusiasm. The problem must definitely lead to a lesson and within reach of students’ ability. Teach your students to have a growth mindset. The first step to helping your students love math is to help them realize that they can get better.

Guided Inquiry Learning

For many students, traditional classroom learning makes them bored and unengaged. As a result, they aren’t entirely learning the subjects being taught. We all have a general goal: to help students learn to their advantage in the future, ensuring they are engaged with any material they are learning during classes. Sometimes, it’s easier said than done. Nowadays, we have a lot of learning styles; these styles help students learn according to what’s best for them.

Guided inquiry is a type of inquiry-based learning where a teacher provides scaffolding to guide the students through their inquiries. In this type of learning allows students to be in control of their learning. The teacher can let the students create investigations, ask questions, do the research study, distill information in order to hone their critical thinking skills. This type of learning is not really new or different from other student-led learning; instead, it is a way for learners to learn from multiple sources of information, using that information in figuring out on their own and finding a solution to problems.
It also has a lot of benefits for students. The foremost benefits are that they will feel motivated to learn and gain higher-level thinking skills like reasoning or evaluating. Moreover, this learning type enables students to retain more information. When they are hands-on with exploration, they’re excited about what to do and what the results will be; having a lot of questions means they are curious, which is a first step towards gaining knowledge and formulate new ideas. Guided-inquiry takes practice; you’ll know it’s worth it when you see your students change from passive students into active learners. To teachers, there are many learning types to try, this is only one of them and it’s worth to try.
